About Us

UMIP is a division of UMI3 which is wholly owned by The University of Manchester, founded to commercialise relevant University research results. As part of UMIP’s enterprise initiatives we aim to foster, support and source funding for social enterprise throughout the University.

This website is dedicated to University of Manchester staff and academics who wish to learn more about Social Enterprise. UMIP is dedicated to supporting staff and academics with a social enterprise idea – whether it’s to find out what’s involved, do a bit of market research or set up a fully fledged business – we are here to support you.

A significant force for good

Through The University of Manchester Social Responsibility Goal 3 we aim to make the University a significant force for good by bringing knowledge to bear on the great issues facing the world in the 21st century. The University consistently strives to advance its social and economic contribution by working with a range of diverse businesses and community groups.

Rapidly growing movement

Social entrepreneurship is a rapidly growing movement within the higher education (HE) sector. The University of Manchester is one of 56 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) which took part in a £2 million HE support initiative, funded by Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), and delivered by UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs.

Pioneering programme

The University successfully led a pioneering programme to place social entrepreneurship at the heart of its culture and infrastructure. Since 2012 we have awarded just over £155,000 to Social Entrepreneurs within the University. Our work in supporting and developing social enterprise innovation at the University has been recognised by winning the ‘HEI of the Year 2015’ award at the UnLtd National Conference in London as a direct follow on to receiving the award for ‘Outstanding HEI Supporting Social Entrepreneurship’ in 2013.

We have developed a further programme of work with UnLtd which we are supporting with a £2 million investment from the Higher Education Innovation Fund. This programme will strengthen and broaden support for social entrepreneurship and social enterprise in universities, and higher education colleges across England.

The programme, is part of the ‘UnLtd SEE Change, Social Entrepreneurship in Education’ initiative. This will encourage higher education institutions to act as ‘hubs’ to support social entrepreneurs beyond their staff and students, and take the lead in supporting social inclusion and economic development in their communities.

We aim to maintain the momentum of our Social Enterprise activity as we continue to build an effective eco-system for the development and growth of social entrepreneurship and social enterprise activity within The University of Manchester.
